What should you do if you’re in a car accident? Often times you are so surprised you forget what you should do. There are some important things you need to do, regardless if you believe you are at fault or not. Here are the top 5:
Stay at the Scene
Never leave the accident scene until it's appropriate to do so. If you leave, particularly where someone may have been hurt, you can face serious criminal penalties for being a hit and run driver.
Check on All Drivers and Passengers
Make sure everyone involved in the accident is okay. Get medical attention for anyone who needs it.
Call the Police
If there's significant property damage, or injuries, call 911. Ask the officer for a copy of his report.
Exchange Information
Get the names, numbers, addresses, drivers' license numbers, license plate numbers, and basic insurance information from all drivers and passengers involved.
Do not admit fault
The responding officer may put who they feel was the at-fault driver on the report, or it may be determined by your insurance company.
Inform Your Insurance Company
Call your insurance agent as soon as possible and tell them you've been in an accident. Tell them the truth about what happened. Explain the facts clearly.
